New team, new year and close derby against Kenilworth in a hard-fought game at the college. The game set off with Southam lending players to Kenilworth who had late injuries. Both Toby R and Arthur C as none travelling reserves turned up and played for both sides with credit, as did Thomas G.

It was the tall Kenilworth second row however that got the game’s first try after a bright opening by Southam.  Southam often out rucked the opponents but took the ball into contact too readily and rather than play to their strengths were held up in mauls. Good runs by Ben R, Harvey KV and Theo B nearly got us back in the game , but the odd hesitation or badly timed pass cost us. It was the dynamic Jasper H that got the reply to make it 5 all. It was in fact  Jasper that scored a fantastic second wide after Kenilworth scored a sloppy given try in the forwards. Jacob H deserves credit for his first 15 mins , latching on and securing ball.  Oscar M. tackled well alongside Harry F, but the consistency of tackling was not there by all at times and player faded in and out of the game. A number of poor tackles saw Kenilworth go ahead again in the 2^nd 3rd. 15- 10.  Josh F, Casey V and Seb G did make last gasp tackles to prevent tries over the line – never give up – well done boys.  The effort and commitment was excellent and the lads should be proud of themselves. Macsen N in the last 3^rd scored a great try by stepping players and reaching over the line to make it 15 -15. Huge pressure was now applied by a rejuvenated Southam. Side stepping Theo made a great break as did Isaac S. A great rip by Freddie D nearly gave Jasper a try as did Oscar in the best phases of play for Southam; but 2 tries later on saw Kenilworth win 25 -15. A good first outing showing promise but much to work on. Well done lads.

 Top skills: presentation and latching. Rucking in most situations.   

Work ons: Tackling by all (all of the time)  don’t fade in and out of games – run to the play. Run forward at spaces and pass before the contact and support on the shoulder when your mate makes a break. 

PGL Little Canada, Ryde, Isle of white

283 students completed the famous Southam house cross country course. Some fantastic performances, support and effort shown from all of the four houses.

The year 7’s were the first to tackle the course, with fantastic numbers tackling the course. Harvey was the fastest round the course closely tracked by Adrian both representing Webb Ellis. Daniel (WH) completed the top 3 for the boys with a great finish running through the line. Even though Webb Ellis took the top 2 places they struggled in the team event, where Godiva took a blistering win ahead of Whittle, Shakespeare and Webb Ellis in forth.

Webb Ellis took 1^st and 2^nd in the girls event too with a fantastic run by Bethan and Xanthe. Whittle managed another  3^rd place with Isabelle finishing strongly just ahead of her team mate Olivia. Whittle managed a great turn out for the girls event and this time managed to nudge ahead of Godiva in the team event closely followed by Shakespeare and Webb Ellis.

The fastest time of the day went to Charlie (GV) in the year 8 boys race, making Mr MacGibbon have to work the whole way round the course. Emilio (WH) tried to chase him down but the 9sec gap was too much to close down in the final stages , the 3^rd and 4^th spots went to Fin (SE) and Tom (WH) finishing in quick succession. The whittle boys turned out in force for the event and saw them sneak another win for the house in the team event, with Godiva in 2^nd, Shakespeare 3^rd and Webb Ellis in 4^th.

The year 8 Godiva girls put on a show for the other houses, fulfilling 5 of the top 10 spots. Bella was the fastest of the girls on the day, followed by Holly and Tammy. The girls went straight out from the whistle and held their lead over the field, chasing Mr MacGibbon down. The Godiva girls steamed to victory in the team event, Webb Ellis took 2^nd, with Shakespeare and Whittle in 4^th.

The year 9 girls race finally saw the Webb Ellis house get rewarded in the team event thanks for amazing runs by Rosa (1^st ), Grace (3^rd), Phoebe (5^th), Lily (8^th) and Edith (10^th) all finishing in the top 10. Eva managed to sneak on the podium for Whittle adding vital points to her houses score. Webb Ellis took the win, followed by Whittle, Shakespeare and Godiva in 4^th.

The most competitive race of the day was the year 9 boys race, it was finally won in a sprint finish by Alex (WH) nudging Jacob (GV) into 2^nd and Jamie (WE) into 3^rd. The team event was also closely contested but the Whittle boys managed to take another win, Godiva finished in a close 2^nd with Webb Ellis in 3^rd and Shakespeare in 4^th.

Everyone should be extremely pleased with their performances; it was a great show of resilience and fitness.
